Catherine(Hartunian) Applegate, DVM is a native of Lexington and a graduate of Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Applegate co-owns Lexington Veterinary Associates with Dr. Smith. She has extensive experience with internal medicine and surgery in small animal practice. She is dedicated to keeping the family practice values we have always had at Lexington Veterinary Associates.

Daria Smith, DVM, MS – Chief of Medicine – Our resident exotics expert, Dr. Smith is a graduate of Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. With over 20 years experience as a small animal and exotics/pocket pet practitioner, Dr. Smith has co-owned Lexington Veterinary Associates since 1994. Dr. Smith is an active member of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.
Stan Read, DVM - Chief of Surgery – Dr. Read has been a small animal practitioner for over 30 years. He has been practicing at Lexington Veterinary Associates since 1981. Dr. Read has extensive experience performing soft tissue surgeries including wound repairs, mass removals, aural hematoma repairs, removal of bladder stones (cystotomy) as well as routine surgeries such as spays, neuters and dentals. He currently does surgery 4-5 days a week.

Alexis Messler, DVM, MS is the latest addition to our practice. Originally from Brookline, MA, Dr. Messler earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Clark University. She spent several years in the human medical field before attending Tuft's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine where she received her veterinary degree. Her primary interests include preventative care, surgery, and dentistry. She is a very welcome addition to our staff and we are proud to have her as an associate.

Consulting Doctors

David J. Abdinoor, VMD – As a residency-trained surgeon with 35 years of experience in orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries, Dr. Abdinoor provides crucial expertise for more complicated surgical procedures. Services Dr. Abdinoor provides for our patients include cranial cruciate ligament repairs (using the "lateral suture" method) as well as surgical correction of congenital luxating patellas (often found in small breed dogs). Dr. Abdinoor is also available for orthopedic consultations on request.

Paul Kaplan, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM (Cardiology) – As a founding member of the New England Veterinary Specialists, Dr. Kaplan has been in practice for over 20 years. A board certified cardiologist, Dr. Kaplan provides cardiology consultations and cardiac ultrasound for our patients in need. He also performs routine abdominal ultrasonography on request.
